The DIA, which has been struggling financially for years, has proposed a 10-year millage (tax) on homeowners in three counties, Wayne, Oakland and Macomb. A recent poll shows that 7 out of 10 voters in the election support the millage, but the fight over it represents an ongoing larger battle in this country about how we fund the arts. I am nervous. Very nervous. PEOPLE OF DETROIT, I KNOW YOU MAY BE STRUGGLING FINANCIALLY, BUT THIS SMALL MILLAGE IS WORTH IT TO SAVE YOUR CITY’S INVALUABLE INSTITUTION. THESE THINGS MATTER, EVEN IF THEY ARE UNQUANTIFIABLE.  DETROITERS!   THIS IS REALLY IMPORTANT DUDES. The DIA was an incredible resource to me during college and an even bigger inspiration in Highschool. Being able to head into the city and stand inches from a Mark Rothko or Van Gogh was such a privilege. Sadly I don’t live in a voting county anymore. Detroit has lost a lot over the years. Industry, morale… but I’ll be damned if we let them do away with our cultural centers, too. No. This museum is fantastic. It is almost perfect, it is beautifully kept and an important part of Detroit. Just knowing that it is struggling is enough reason for me to share this. I had no idea, I guess I need to figure out how to help.
