I like seeing all of our late night coffee break rants written down. Memoriiiiies. :D
That was a lot of typing, but I think that fixes basically all of our complaints with that movie.

Oooh you know I have a lot of issues with this movie.
Right.

I think the Once-ler is great, and is the product of a loving development team. He fits into the original story fantastically and is a likable character that suffered from too little screen time and drowning in unnecessary characters.
He could’ve been a DISASTER. Instead he was a character the audience could empathize with and grow to love, making his transformation into a greedy, uncaring business man much more powerful and compelling than if he had been as flat as in the original story. (I am not criticizing Suess, I am saying that in a short format, that was fine, but for a full length movie, the character arc was important.)
His Thneeds.
LORAX. I wish we’d had more time to see the Once-ler and the Lorax build their bromance! We were simply suppose to believe that the Lorax had learned to Trust the Once-ler, but we hardly see it! It left the moments where the Once-ler begins to push the Lorax away and ignore him less powerful than they could’ve been, even if the acting was spot on in that particular scene. If there’s nothing backing a moment, all we have are the character’s reaction. If we understand the situation we will understand and empathize with the reaction.
My unpopular opinion is that he’s just a guy. A guy with dreams that is a bit awkward, and emotionally distant from his family. Stop saying he was abused or some shit. He can just be an interesting character of his own accord.
The entirety of the climax would’ve worked better if it were more intimately involved with the Onceler. He is the story’s emotional core.
Cut out Ted. CUT OUT TED. TED, HIS MOM, HIS GRANDMA, SHORTY McHORRIBLECHARACTERPANTS THE AIR-SALESMAN AND TAYLOR SWIFT. CUT OUT THE ENTIRE FUTURE PLOT LINE. (the problem with this option is that there is no resolution to the Once-ler’s mistakes, going against basic animated movie writing.)
Alternately, cut out everyone but Ted OR Taylor Swift. What if just one character wondered and wished about trees, and was compelled to find the Once-ler of their own accord. One character, like the Onceler, could dream of great things, but it would be to undo what the Once-ler had done in pursuit of his dream.
What if they had to learn to get the Once-ler to trust them, find their own way to get the tree to grow. What if they painted that beautiful mural on the Once-ler’s house instead. I think it would be a great bonding moment, perhaps compelling the Once-ler to believe again.
Oh, and the Once-ler should’ve made the decision to cut the trees on his own, instead of being ordered by his mother. I liked that he balked at the notion, not wanting to break his promise. Perhaps the demand could’ve been too high, so he eventually had to speed the process along. I feel like his own greed should’ve driven him to break his promise to the Lorax.
What if we saw the Once-ler suffer the realization of what he had done a little longer, watch as he tries to amend it and fails to grow anything. What if just like the forest animals had once done, he gathered rocks and placed them in circles around every stump? (We don’t even need to see this, what if the present day character simply stumbles upon this fact and allows the audience to understand the significance? )
The entire plot with the air was unnecessary and pains me to no end. The present day character could simply be unhappy living in a plastic, artificial world, while the town he lives in no longer knows the difference. All we need to do is see the world and understand how it came to be- we do not need another greedy businessman capitalizing on it. EVERYTHING should be the Once-ler’s fault.
TL;DR: This movie didn’t need a villain. The antagonist was the Once-ler’s greed. Once he overcomes it and realizes his mistake, he and the present day character must remedy the mess caused by his greed.
Just thought the Lorax Fandom should know the Once-ler was in dealings with IKEA. Predictably, the remains of the truffula tree sprouts are just as uselessly desirable as a thneed.
Hey, remember when people still cared about this movie?
Reblog for the four remaining Lorax fans who somehow missed the wave of notes this got last night? I mean, holy Seuss hats you guys, I’ve never gotten a response that big quite that fast, noting I’m in dealings with Whovians, the Sherlocked and Bronies. And I’m shamelessly making fun of this thing you like.
Wow, so I seriously underestimated the existence of the Lorax fandom, that’s over a hundred notes on my Onceler comic in barely fifteen minutes.
Edit: TWO HUNDRED IN HALF AN HOUR?!
HAHAHAHAHAHAH! >8D
Two hundred and seventy four in one hour.
And it just keeps biggering.
And biggering.
AND BIGGERING.
Hey, remember when people still cared about this movie?

Yup, more Onceler. This is how I figured his profile should work, couldn’t find ref that day, but I liked the outcome.
Thought I was getting there with this comic but I’m just not happy with all of the coloring yet. I want to get it done soon, though! Then I’ll draw him a few more times, spam you all with my headcanons/fixes for the abomination of a movie and take an exit stage right.
I’m enjoying this way more than I should. It might be because I get to reconnect with my ink, caran d’ache and Corel. Rediscovered the oil brush!
Anyway, the colors are reffed from what little I could find of the movie, Brilliant use of complimentary colors.
Oh yeah I was doing a Onceler comic. Getting there, I swear.

Onceler’s stick legs are fun.
Holy Lorax you guys. The amount of notes this got in a few hours was a bit much. Thanks!
The final will (hopefully) be a hell of a lot better and a hell of a lot less shot from my phone like.

Onceler’s stick legs are fun.
More onceler. This one is actually notable because I was trying so hard to keep him on model but it was always so stiff and lame. Then I said Fuck That and drew a quick gesture. It was immediately more expressive, and even looks more like him. Another lesson on how too much reference can mess you up.
More Onceler drawings from that comic I’m pathetically stumbling through. I’m trying to make him look actually sad but it looks really stale. Anyway, I took a picture of these before I erase them.
My entire goal is to make him appropriately crushed by what he has done..so I can rip it out from under him by pointing out that he never planted that last seed. Seriously, plot hole. Plot hole in the original, but plot hole.
More Onceler from a comic I’m doing. Who knows if I’ll finish it. He had so much potential, it’s frustrating enough to make me want to shove my hands in his story.
m2sdoodlebarn replied to your photo: Studies of The Once-ler. I thought his design was…
We’re watching the Lorax tonight. As much as I was against them showing the Once-ler in full, actually kind of looking forward to seeing how he’s handled past the two minute clips on youtube.
He’s great. Some of the scripting is a bit forced, some lines need a map to get through. However, he’s incredibly appealing.
All in all he suffered a Dr Facilier (Princess and the Frog) like syndrome- the movie ignored its most effective character. It leaves you feeling like you never got to know him or see his vital moments. Odd, seeing as it really should have been his story, but that’s how it went. the thing is, you’re left feeling like you wanted to see his entire story, which I deem successful, even if the control of the story wasn’t.
